Multidisciplinary Skin ClinicOverview. The Lacks Cancer Center is a Multidisciplinary Skin Clinic comprised of a team of dermatologists, surgical oncologists and medical oncologists for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with skin cancer or suspicious skin lesions. Patients referred to this clinic generally have a diagnosis of melanoma, are concerned about a suspicious spot, or would like a second opinion. We are equipped with the most innovative technologies in the evaluation of skin abnormalities, including the only dermoscope in West Michigan. Here, our dermatologists perform biopsies and evaluations on site, and—for patients with more complicated skin lesions—our surgical oncologists are available to perform a removal in the clinic if necessary. The skin clinic is held in the afternoon on the first and third Wednesday of the month.Dermoscopy & Mole Mapping. We are the only center in West Michigan that provides dermoscopy, a state-of-the-art technique that uses very sensitive digital photography to make a full body “map” of an individual’s skin. This technique is endorsed by both the American Cancer Society and the American Academy of Dermatology. For most patients, regular skin self-exams and annual physician exams are sufficient to identify changes in moles that might indicate skin cancer. But some people have so many moles, or such a significant family history, that it’s hard to track potential changes. The dermoscope contains a computer program that stores personal “maps” and other pertinent information, which helps dermatologists identify suspicious moles that change over time, and are more likely to contain melanoma. This is an invaluable tool for patients with a great number of suspicious pigmented skin tumors that cannot practically be removed, or that require close monitoring. In future visits, we can compare the baseline photographs with your current mole pattern to help identify potentially dangerous changes. The pictures include six million pixels, which allows them to be zoomed up to 400% for close comparison with your current moles or potential cancers. To schedule a Dermoscopy, or to enter our Multidisciplinary Skin Clinic, simply request a referral from your primary care physician or self-refer by calling 1-877-LACKS-MI or 616-752-LACK(S). |
